AL helpless in ‘whip Shamsul’s area’

Leaders and activists of Awami League (AL), Juba League and Chhatra League are helpless in the ‘state’ of Jatiya Sangsad Whip and Chattogram-12 (Patiya) constituency lawmaker Shamsul Haque Chowdhury.

The whip and his son Nazmul Haque Chowdhury Sharun carry out torture in a medieval manner and file cases if anyone protests or opposes their illegal activities.

Nobody from AL leaders to Chhatra League leaders and activists is left out of their wrath. Even domestic helps of the leaders are also not being spared, said sources.

Chattogram South district AL leader Selim Nabi said, "Shamsul and his son Sharun have started AL-cleansing activities in Patiya. Attacks are being carried out or cases are being filed every day.”

“I was sued in a case of mobile theft as I protested their misdeeds. Sharon also harassed me several times,” alleged the leader.

Former Patiya upazila AL General Secretary Nasir Uddin said a conflict centring upazila AL council was developed with Shamsul.

“Since then, I along with my family have been facing attack and cases repeatedly. Everyone including the senior leaders are being harassed for going against them,” said Nasir.

Former Patiya upazila Chhatra League Joint-Secretary Jamir Uddin said, "I worked from the front for preparing the ground for election after Shamsul joined AL from Jatiya Party."

“After being elected as MP, they started filing cases one after another against me due to disagreement on some issues,” he said.

“They filed some 27 cases against me till now. My three brothers, seven nephews, four domestic helps and two CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers were not spared from the wrath of the whip and his son,” said Jamir.

It has been learnt that Shamsul Haque Chowdhury concentrated on forming his own ring after being elected MP from the Patiya constituency.

At that time, he started rehabilitating the leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat instead of the tested leaders and activists of AL.

Several hundred leaders and activists of AL were tortured and sued by them over the last five years. Many of them saved lives by leaving the area, said the sources.

Of them, AL Leader Selim was sued in a case filed for mobile theft and snatching Tk 8,000 while former Upazila AL General Secretary Nasir for clash, Chhatra League Joint General Secretary for snatching, extortion and kidnapping and Swechchhasebok League Assistant Liberation War Affairs Secretary Nazim Uddin was sued for women and children repression.

Patiya Upazila Krishka League General Secretary Abu Syed, former member of upazila Juba League Saiful Islam Saifu, South district Swechchhasebok League leader Jamshed Hiru, Patiya Municipality Ward Juba League President Mir Abdul Awal, Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela General Secretary Mobashwer Alam and Finance Secretary Mahbub Alam were sued on charge of vandalising vehicles.

Patiya Government College former Chhatra League Vice President Saifur Azam Runel was sued in an arson case while Municipality Sramik League Vice President Saifuddin Bhola in vandalism and abduction case.

Senior AL leaders Bazal Ahmed, Mohammad Ishaq, Patiya Awami League leaders Mohammad Kamal, Rabiul Hossain Apel, Mohammad Obaidullah and Municipal Awami League leader Noman Sarwar Dulal were not spared from cases.

The family members of the leaders and activists were also sued for ‘harassing them’.

Former Chhatra League leader Jamir Uddin’s brother Md Raihan, Abdur Rahman, nephew Md Asad, Imrul and Md Irad were also made accused in the cases.
