HC disqualifies Tufan for bail for six months

The High Court has rejected bail petition of expelled Sramik League leader of Bogura Tufan Sarkar in a graft case.

A division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Thursday.

The HC also ordered that he would not be able to apply for bail in any court of the country for the next six months in the graft case.

Such order came as Tufan filed a new bail petition by concealing the information of previous rule pending with the court.

Advocate Shah Alam Sarkar appeared for Tufan Sarkar and Barrister Mohammad Sajjad Hossain for Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On September 9, 2020, the High Court issued a rule nisi asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why Tufan shall not be granted bail in the case. Tufan filed a fresh petition with the court during pendency of the rule.

Tufan Sarkar is facing a case filed by the ACC with Bogura Sadar Police Station on December 31, 2018 for amassing Tk 1.59 crore illegally.

Tufan Sarkar made headlines by shaving heads of a woman and her daughter in the area in 2017. Two cases were filed against him in this regard. He has been in jail since July 29, 2017.
