India engages with UNSC on restoration of democracy in Myanmar: MEA

India is engaged with United Nations Security Council members to 'uphold the rule of law and democratic process ' of Myanmar.

Answering to a question on the military coup in Myanmar, Spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs Anurag Srivastava reiterated India's concern over the happening.

India is always steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar, he said.

“We are also engaged on the issue as a member of the UN Security council,” said Anurag Srivastava.

On the question of future engagement with the present Army ruler of Myanmar, he said "India and Myanmar are neighbours with close cultural and people to people ties, bolstered by trade, economic, security and defence related exchanges. We are monitoring the developments in that country closely. "

He said India extended assistance to Myanmar in its fight against Covid-19 by providing medicines, test kits and vaccines.

"We remain committed to continuing our humanitarian support for the people of Myanmar in mitigating the health and economic impact of pandemic," he added.
