‘Drug dealer' killed in Mymensingh ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with member of Detective Branch of police at Narayanpur Bazar of Rajibpur union under Iswarganj upazila in Mymensingh early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rashid, 40, son of Hafiz Uddin, hailing from Ghagra village of the upazila.

Police claimed that Rashid was accused in 13 drugs cases with several police stations.

Shah Kamal, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch, said on secrete information, that a gang of drug peddlers were gathering in the area for trading drugs, a team of law enforcers conducted a drive around 2:00 am.

Sensing the presence of the elite force, Rashid and his associates opened fire at DB police, forcing them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, he said.

After the gunfight, Rashid sustained bullet injuries as he was caught in the line of fire while others managed to flee, he added.

Later, the injured was taken to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead, Shah Kamal said.

The OC also said that a sub-inspector of police (SI) named Shamim Al Mamun was injured in the incident.
