Two get life for stealing newborns

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced two human traffickers to life imprisonment in a case filed on charges of stealing newborns and trafficking.

The convicted are Jorna Begum of Sirajganj and Manik Mia of Narayanganj.

Judge Joysree Samaddar of Dhaka Women and Children Repressions Prevention Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict in presence of the two convicted.

The court also fined the duo Tk 50,000 each.

Besides, the court also acquitted two others accused---Abdul Matin and Shila Begum from the charges as the allegations brought against them were not proved.

On January 12, 2006, police filed the case with Khilgaon police station in the capital accusing the accused on charges of stealing newborn and trafficking.

According to the prosecution, police arrested Jorna Begum along with an 8-10 day-old newborn boy from Khilgaon area in the capital on January 12, 2006. Based on her information, the law enforcers also rescued a newborn girl from her residence in Rampura.

During interrogation, Jorna Begum confessed that she took the newborn boy from one Manik Miah who is living Fatullah in Narayanganj while the girl baby from the security guard Abdul Matin of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Later, police arrested Manik Mia in this connection and submitted a charge sheet accusing the four people on March 26, 2006 in the case.

Jorna Begum, who had lived in Middle East for long time, used to collect newborns and then trafficked them to different countries in middle-east, police said.
