Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the government will discover the reason why farmers set the paddy field on fire recently.

“It will be investigated whether it is an act of sabotage or it is aimed at damaging reputation of the government. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already directed the ministry concerned to inquire into the fire incident.

“Crisis (over low price of paddy) arose in different places, but why did farmers protest in such a way through setting fire to the paddy field? Why are these incidents happening in a particular place?” he said.

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said this while addressing a press conference at the Secretariat office in the capital on Wednesday.

The AL general secretary said that their party, too, will open a probe into the incident.

The farmers staged demonstrations, as they have been forced to sell paddy at Tk 500 to Tk 600 per mound despite the fact that the government fixed the price at Tk 1040.

The minister said that the problem should be resolved realistically.

“It can’t be solved through torching the paddy field. The government is sincere over the issue and they never want the farmers to face financial loss. The pro-farmer government will not do any work against farmers,” he said.

The minister returned to work at his secretariat office on Sunday after more than two months due to his illness.

He returned home on May 15 from Singapore after 2 months and 11 days.

After undergoing successful bypass surgery in Mount Elizabeth Hospital on March 20, Quader was moved to a cabin on March 26 from the intensive care unit of the hospital after his condition improved.

He was discharged from the hospital on April 5 and later he stayed at a rented house near the hospital over a month.

Earlier on March 3, Quader was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) following breathing problems and diagnosis of three blocks in the heart.
