A university student was found dead at his girlfriend’s residence in Kuril area of the capital on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Ashiq-E-Elahi, 20, a fifth semester student at American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB).

Nazmus Sakib, a classmate of the deceased, said Ashiq was in a relationship with a classmate for last one and a half years. The girl lived at a rented residence with another girl in Kuril-Biswa Road area.

Abu Bakar Siddiq, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Vatara Police Station, said that the youth went to the girl’s residence and asked her to marry him. The youth threatened to commit suicide as the girl declined the proposal.

At one stage, the girl went out the residence following a scuffle over the matter. While returned home she found Ashiq hanging from the window grill with a belt, the OC said.

Ashiq was taken to Kurmitola Hospital where the physician pronounced him dead.

Al Amin, brother of the deceased, claimed that girlfriend of Ashiq killed his brother in a planned way and now she is trying to cover-up the incident as suicide.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for an autopsy.
