The government is likely to take up a project to replace 2000 kilometres unfit gas distribution lines surrounding Dhaka at an estimated cost of Tk 1216.26 crore, a top official has said.

“We have planned to replace old-age gas distribution lines to improve the gas supply situation in Dhaka,” state minister for power and energy Nasrul Hamid told daily sun.

The government is importing 500mmcfd of LNG. After supplying 350mmcfd in Chattogram, the supply of the rest 150mmcfd faces widespread systems loss in Dhaka due to old distribution pipelines.

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) managing director Md. Harun-Or-Rashid at a recent meeting in Secretariat said they divided Dhaka into 143 areas.

Considering the low-pressure problem, damaged gas pipeline and overburdened pipelines, TGTDCL will improve gas distribution network in 60 areas in the first phase, he informed at the meeting.

“We are preparing GIS design and development project proposal (DPP) for replacing the over-burdened pipeline,” the TGTDCL chief said.

During the meeting, the ministry of the power, energy and mineral resources decided to implement the gas pipeline project on an emergency basis.

Last week at the hearing on the proposed gas tariff hike, consumers of TGTDCL vented their frustration over the low gas pressure in many areas of the city.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) energy adviser Prof M Shamsul Alam said the government will not need to raise the gas tariff if it can stop gas pilferage.

According to the revised proposals, Titas and Sundarban have sought 208 per cent hike in the gas tariff for power plants, 211 per cent for fertilizer companies, 96 per cent for captive power plants, 132 per cent for industries, 41 per cent for commercial entities, and 50 per cent for CNG stations.

The gas distributors also sought 80 per cent rise in the monthly gas bill for both single-burner and double-burner cooking stove, from Tk 750 to Tk 1,350 and from Tk 800 to Tk 1,440 respectively.
