Two cops withdrawn for beating bank employee in Tongi

An employee of state-owned Sonali Bank was beaten by two policemen in Tongi indusrtrial area of Gazipur on Sunday.

The victim, Mohammad Amir Hossain, 45, is an employee of Sonali Bank (National University Branch).

He told journalists that he was going to office by a rickshaw from his residence at Shataish Bank Para area around 9:00am.

As his rickshaw reached near Shataish road, sergeant Md Firoz and constable Shyamal Datta stopped the rickshaw stating that it a no-rickshaw zone. It led to a quarrel with the rickshaw-puller.

At this stage, Amir Hossain told policemen that he was leaving the rickshaw paying the fare.

“But the policemen hurled abusive words at me,” the bank official said. “All of a sudden they turned furious and started beating me indiscriminately. My shirt was torn and I was also bleeding,” he said.

People who witnessed the scene protested the police action and besieged the police men.

Later, members of Tongi police station with the help of traffic police rescued the two police men.

They also sent the injured bank official to Tongi Government Hospital for treatment.

Contacted, Gazipur traffic division assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Md Saleh Uddin Ahmed told this correspondent that sergeant Md Firoz and constable Shyamal Datta were withdrawn and attached to Gazipur police line.
