Northern region still in grip of cold wave

Though the fury of the biting cold has reduced slightly in some parts of the country, the northern and southern regions are still in the grip of cold wave.

Mild to moderate cold wave has been sweeping across the northern and southern regions since January 4. Then the fury of the cold increased gradually and it spread across the country, disrupting normal life, farming and communications severely

This year cold wave has affected badly the life of people across the country as the mercury reached 2.6 degrees Celsius on January 8 - the lowest recorded temperature in 50 years.

A mild cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and the regions of Tangail, Madaripur, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Barisal, Satkhira, Jessore, Chuadanga and Kushtia, and it may continue, forecast Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Tuesday.

Arif Hossain, meteorologist at BMD, told the daily sun that mild cold wave miay continue over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions and some parts of Khulna division during January.

Country’s overall temperature will increase slightly and the temperature may decrease after 3-4 days, he said.

Minimum temperature of the country was recorded at 7.7 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi division and maximum temperature at 24.7 degrees Celsius in Teknaf of Chittagong division on Tuesday.

The elderly people and those of low income group have been facing untold sufferings due to severe cold wave.

 A large number of disadvantaged people are found to be living under open sky and public spaces such as bus terminal and railway stations. Day-labourers and slum-dwellers are suffering a lot as they cannot afford to buy warm clothes.

The number of patients with cough, fever, asthma and other cold-related diseases marked a sharp rise during the last couple of days, hospital sources said.

An elderly man died of cold related afflictions at Kapilguni village of Paikgacha upazila in Khulna on Monday night.

Crop cultivation has also been affected due to continuous cold wave and fog.
