State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam will contest for mayor in the upcoming city corporation election.

His remarks have fuelled fresh speculation over the ruling BNP’s choice for the DSCC mayoral race, as the party has yet to formally announce its candidate.

Shahe Alam made the remarks at an event held at a residence for sanitation workers in the capital’s Dayaganj area last Monday. A video of his remarks has since gone viral on social media.

Pointing to Abdus Salam at the event, the state minister was heard saying, “The city corporation election will be held in the coming days. Our respected Abdus Salam will be a mayoral candidate, while Haji Makbul will contest for councillor.”

Several BNP leaders are reportedly being discussed as potential candidates for the DSCC mayoral post, with Salam emerging as one of the prominent names.

A veteran BNP leader and a familiar figure in Dhaka politics, Salam has already publicly expressed his intention to contest the mayoral election.
