Independent candidate Kazi Enayet Ullah has withdrawn from the election race, formally expressing support for BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Enayet was contesting the upcoming 13th parliamentary election in the Dhaka-17 constituency with the ‘rooster’ symbol.

He made the announcement on Monday while attending a BNP election rally in the capital’s Banani area.

Tarique Rahman, who is also an aspirant in the same constituency, was present on the stage at the time.

When asked about the reason behind his decision, Enayet said, “I decided to contest the election for two primary reasons. First, in my ancestral area, I observed that political activities were mostly limited to Jamaat-e-Islami and Andaleeve Rahman Partha; there was a lack of other significant representation.

“Second, I wanted to do something impactful for the youth of this constituency. I entered politics with the vision of launching special pilot projects, such as providing 1,000 passports free of cost and establishing a school where students could learn various skills alongside four languages, including Spanish and Italian, all free of charge.”

Enayet said, “Later, Tarique Rahman emerged on the scene, and I realised we shared the same vision. During our discussions, he assured me that there would be opportunities to implement these plans. His actions and political philosophy align perfectly with mine.

“Furthermore, expatriates seek respect. Many who live abroad wish to return and contribute to their motherland, yet many hesitate for various reasons. However, I chose to come back. I found a strong synergy between my experience living abroad and Tarique Rahman’s planning. For this reason, I have decided to withdraw from this seat.”

He added, “My supporters and I will work for the ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol from today.”

A prominent businessman, Kazi Enayet Ullah has achieved significant success particularly in the airline, real estate, and restaurant industries, as well as with the perfume brand 'Harmonist'.

He is the founding president of the France-Bangladesh Economic Chamber, the founding secretary-general of the European organisation AEBA, and the founding president of the World Bangladesh Organization (WBO).
