More than 200 people were detained from the main office of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at GPO intersection in Gulistan, Dhaka on Saturday.
Paltan police station Inspector (Investigation) Md Shafiqul Islam said that they were taken to the station to check links with the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned. Their identities were not confirmed.
Earlier on the day, Awami League activists held a flash procession on Road 27 in Dhanmondi, which was followed by several crude bomb explosions.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Imdadul Islam Tawhid confirmed the incident, saying the incident occurred in front of the Bata showroom at noon.
Police from Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur stations detained four people over the incident there.
Asked whether Dhanmondi procession participants later went to the JSD office for shelter, Inspector Md Shafiqul Islam said that the matter was under investigation.
Police and locals said a procession under the banner of Mohammadpur thana Awami League started from Sat Masjid Road. Led by its member secretary Tarequzzaman, it passed Ibn Sina Hospital and IST College before reaching the Bata showroom.
Over 50 persons reportedly joined the rally. Eyewitnesses said slogans about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s birthday were also heard.
Mohammadpur OC Abdul Halim said that police detained Imran while he was fleeing after the rally and explosions. His organisational affiliation was being checked.
Dhanmondi OC Imdadul Islam Tawhid said that three more people were detained while fleeing and police also recovered a banner.
They were identified as Jubo Mohila League member Laboni, 28, Awami League activist Md Sirajul and Chhatra League activist Raju, 28.
The OC said that legal action would follow verification.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Md Aktar Hossain said that police received information about a procession and “Joy Bangla” slogans at the JSD office.
He said that the detainees were taken to the station for questioning and the operation was ongoing.
Paltan OC Arifur Islam said that some people were brought in based on specific intelligence and were being questioned before legal action.
After news spread, Jubo Dal central executive committee Joint General Secretary Rabiul Islam Nayan and Paltan thana leaders and activists surrounded the office.
DMP’s Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Harun-or-Rashid and many police members later arrived. Around 4pm, many detainees were brought out handcuffed.
Earlier on 11 September, leaders and activists of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations attempted a flash rally in Gulshan. Crude bombs were exploded and police fired rubber bullets.
Police said that 179 people have so far been arrested in cases filed over that incident. Some were also taken on remand for questioning.
Amid widespread discussion over the rally, Gulshan police station OC Md Daud Hossain and Gulshan Division DC M Tanvir Ahmed were withdrawn from their posts.
