A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Maksuda Islam, the first wife of Satkhira-4 lawmaker and expelled Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of Nazrul’s second wife.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after police produced her before the court following the completion of her remand.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution department confirmed the matter, saying the accused was not brought to the courtroom during the hearing and no petition was filed by a lawyer on her behalf.
Regarding the case development, investigating officer Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin told the Daily Sun that Maksuda Islam had been interrogated and was later sent to jail following the court order. He said they were questioning Gazi Nazrul Islam and investigating other evidence in the case.
However, in the detention petition for Maksuda, the investigator claimed that they had obtained important information related to the case, which would assist the investigation.
Earlier, on 21 September, the court placed Maksuda on one-day remand, while Gazi Nazrul was placed on four-day remand.
They were arrested in the abetment of suicide case filed by Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station after the deceased was found hanging from a flat on the second floor of NAM Bhaban, a residential complex for lawmakers in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, on Sunday evening.
Handwritten notes questioned

After recovering Mariam’s body, police found some handwritten notes from the residence where she lived.
The notes contained references to relationship tensions, love and alleged betrayal, as well as Mariam’s emotional distress, grievances and determination to preserve her self-respect.
However, Mariam’s mother, Firoza Khanam, questioned the authenticity of the notes, claiming that they did not match her daughter’s handwriting.
“Her handwriting is not like this. Her handwriting was worse. I can’t match it with her (handwriting),” she said.
However, the investigating officer, Mohammad Salahuddin, told the Daily Sun that he had not yet received the notes and their authenticity was still untested.
“I have not received the complete case file yet and the note has not come to me yet. Once I receive it, it will be examined and verified. If necessary, it will be sent for forensic testing. Only then can its authenticity be determined,” he said.
Father alleges blackmail
Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, said Obaidur Rahman, an absconding accused, was responsible for his daughter’s death and that the truth would come to light if he was arrested.
Claiming that Obaidur recorded a video of Mariam’s private moments and demanded Tk10 lakh from him, he alleged that the video was circulated on social media after he refused to pay, leaving his daughter mentally distressed.
“After that incident, my daughter broke down and used to cry whenever she saw us. This would not have happened if he had not started it. He started everything and played with my daughter’s life,” he said.
Mariam’s burial
Mariam Khatun was buried at Choudoroshi village in Gabura Union of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira. Her body reached her village home around 11pm on Monday. She was buried at Choudoroshi village around 1am after her janaza.
