Salahuddin warns police, Ansar cadres against political bias

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday urged fresh cadre officers of Bangladesh Police and Ansar to maintain political neutrality while serving the state, stressing that allegiances formed in student life must never influence their conduct.
“Officers may have had political affiliations during their student days, but these must in no way be reflected in their professional lives,” Salahuddin said.
He was speaking at an introductory meeting with police and Ansar cadres of the 45th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) chaired by Manzur Morshed Chowdhury,  senior secretary of the home ministry, at the Secretariat in Dhaka.
Congratulating the new officers, Salahuddin said their primary responsibility is to uphold law and order as smooth functioning of the country’s administration and development activities as well as overall public security depend on their performance.
The home minister explained that entering police and Ansar services is distinctly challenging compared to other cadre services as it entails working in a high pressure and often confrontational environment.

“They [police and Ansar] frequently need to take decisions within moments, making their intelligence, professionalism and presence of mind essential,” he said.
Salahuddin also urged them to exercise utmost caution and discretion in enforcing the law. Furthermore, he advised against abusing their authority under any circumstance, emphasising how they play an important role in upholding public perception and peoples’ sense of security.
Inspector General of Police (in-charge) and Additional Inspector General (administration) AKM Awlad Hossain and Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud attended the programme as special guests.
According to the ministry, 80 candidates were recommended for the BCS Police cadre and 25 for the BCS Ansar cadre through the 45th BCS examination.
Following the official results announcement , 65 police cadre officers and 19 Ansar cadre officers joined the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday.
