A speeding bus of “Razib Paribahan” was heading towards Muktagachha in Mymensingh from the capital, while a speeding CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying six passengers and the driver was coming from the opposite direction.
As the two vehicles came very close to each other, both drivers tried to move aside, but before they could do so, they collided head-on, killing all seven occupants of the auto-rickshaw on the spot on Friday, according to police.
The crash occurred on Akua Bypass Road at Purba Gandrapa in Mymensingh city at about 1:30pm, halting traffic for an hour and a half.
The bodies of the deceased, including three women, were taken to the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Four of them who are of the same family were identified: Rashida Begum, 70, of Darihamidpur village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila; her son Mofazzal Hossain, 50; Mofazzal's daughter Morjina Akter, 25; and Morjina's son Minan, 5.
They were on their way from Jamalpur to Gazipur when the incident occurred. Mofazzal worked as a mason in Gazipur.
Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mymensingh Kotwali police station, told the mass media that police were trying to identify the deceased by checking their mobile phones and by other means.
After the identities are confirmed, the bodies will be handed over to their families following the autopsies, he said.
The OC said that the driver and helper of the bus had fled, but police had seized the bus. Police were trying to arrest them, he added.
Zulhaz Uddin, station officer at Mymensingh Fire Service, said that upon being informed, two units of the fire service rushed to the scene and recovered the bodies.
They also cleared the wrecked auto-rickshaw from the road with the help of police and locals. The bodies were then sent to the hospital, he said.
Eyewitness Mamun Hossain said that he heard a loud bang while going to a mosque to offer Jummah prayers, and rushed to the spot, where he found the wrecked auto-rickshaw.
Locals pulled the auto out from under the bus, and the bodies were then recovered, Mamun said.
