The highest number of daily dengue hospitalisations this year was recorded in the past 24 hours ending at 8am on Sunday, with 2,158 new patients admitted to hospitals, while six more people died of the mosquito-borne disease.
With the latest fatalities, the dengue death toll has risen to 225 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the six deaths reported during the period, two occurred in Dhaka division, two in Khulna division, and one each in Chattogram and Barishal divisions.
September has recorded the highest number of dengue deaths so far this year. According to DGHS data, 128 people have died of dengue in the first 27 days of September alone, nearly three times the 43 deaths recorded throughout August.
The number of dengue cases has also continued to rise sharply in September, with 2,158 patients admitted to hospitals across the country in the past 24 hours, marking the highest single-day hospitalisation figure recorded so far this year.
With the latest admissions, the total number of dengue cases reported in the country this year has reached 73,694.
The DGHS said 68,006 dengue patients have so far recovered and been discharged
from hospitals across the country. Of these, 1,755 patients were discharged in the latest 24-hour period.
The monthly breakdown of dengue deaths shows a sharp rise in fatalities in recent months.
September has already recorded 128 deaths, compared with 43 in August, 36 in July and 13 in June.
The disease claimed one life in May, while two deaths each were reported in January and February, according to the DGHS. The latest surge in both hospitalisations and deaths highlights the worsening dengue situation in the country as September draws to a close.
The record number of daily admissions also indicates growing pressure on hospitals to manage the increasing number of dengue patients.
