CHATTOGRAM: Department of Environment (DoE) sealed off a paper mill for polluting the river Halda, the lone fish spawning centre of the country, on Sunday.

The move to shut down the factory came at that time when a huge quantity of fishes of different species died due to rampant pollution in the river Halda over the last few days.

A DoE team during inspection found that ‘Mack Paper and Board Mills Limited’ in the city’s Oxygen Morr area was producing products without Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and clearance certificate from the DoE, said DoE Metro Director Azadur Rahman Mollick.

The DoE earlier awarded and realised financial penalty of around Tk 50 lakh from the factory on different grounds including for lacking the ETP and clearance certificate, he said.
