Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Khulna and Bagerhat on Thursday to attend several programmes, including the inauguration of a nationwide grassroots sports talent hunt initiative.

The prime minister will leave Dhaka by helicopter at 9am and fly to Mongla before travelling to Khulna by road, Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atikur Rahman Ruman said.

He said the prime minister had two scheduled programmes in Mongla and one in Khulna. He will also visit the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R) in Bagerhat sadar upazila.

In Khulna, Tarique Rahman will inaugurate Notun Kuri Sports (Season 2) at the district stadium. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has organised the programme to identify sporting talent at the grassroots level across the country.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's visit has generated enthusiasm among local BNP leaders, activists and supporters, as well as residents.

The city has been cleaned and decorated ahead of his arrival. The district stadium and adjoining roads have been adorned with colourful banners and festoons promoting Notun Kuri Sports (Season 2).

Walls along the stretch from Shibbari intersection to the main entrance of the railway station have been decorated with graffiti depicting Khulna's history and heritage, memories of the July mass uprising, former prime minister Khaleda Zia, the Sundarbans and the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju said the city had been cleaned and beautified to welcome the prime minister.

"We are waiting to warmly welcome our prime minister," he said.
