UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for stronger preparedness and international cooperation to minimise the devastating impacts of tsunamis, one of nature’s deadliest disasters.
In a message marking World Tsunami Awareness Day 2026 on Thursday (5 November), Guterres said proper preparation and collective action could help reduce damage and save lives.
He stressed the need for governments to take the lead in building disaster-resilient coastal infrastructure, planning land use according to risk and establishing multi-hazard early warning systems.
Countries should also strengthen cooperation in science, data sharing and forecasting to improve tsunami preparedness, according to the message.
The UN chief said individuals, families and communities in tsunami-prone areas also had an important role to play in reducing risks.
This year’s theme, “Be Tsunami Ready: Resilience Starts with You”, highlights the importance of recognising tsunami warning signs, preparing family emergency plans and participating in disaster drills.
The message also called for greater support for people who may face additional difficulties during disasters, including residents of informal settlements, children, older people and persons with disabilities.
Guterres urged people worldwide to renew their commitment to disaster preparedness, emphasising that collective efforts could help communities withstand tsunami threats and protect lives when waves strike.
