A series of alleged attacks on the Christian minority in West Bengal, India, involving physical assault, molestation, and coercive conversion attempts, has triggered widespread alarm among community members.
In the latest incident on Monday night, over 30 men claiming
affiliation with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) allegedly barged into the
residence of Parbati Hembram Soren in Panskura, Purba Medinipur, during family
prayers.
The attackers assaulted family members, vandalised their
prayer space, and threatened to sever electricity, water supplies, and social
welfare benefits unless they renounced Christianity.
Panskura police confirmed receiving a written complaint, stating that an inquiry is underway before lodging a First Information Report (FIR).

The episode followed attacks between 18 and 20 October 2026
in Chandrakona, Paschim Medinipur, where a woman alleged that individuals
identifying as Bajrang Dal activists assaulted her, tore her clothing, and
forcibly subjected her to a public "purification" bath.
She further alleged that four community members were coerced
into attending religious rituals at a local pavilion on 20 October 2026.
Chandrakona police registered an FIR against 13 local residents for attempted murder and outraging modesty, but have yet to make any arrests, citing a lack of sufficient evidence
According to research organisation India Hate Lab, 60
incidents targeting Christians were documented across 13 districts of the state
between 13 May and 20 September.
Bangiya Christiya Pariseba founder Herod Mullick voiced deep
concern over escalating attacks and administrative inaction. Denying
allegations of violence, VHP leader Chandranath Das claimed their campaign to
convert Christians to Hinduism is conducted peacefully.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Debjit Sarkar
stated the state administration maintains zero tolerance towards wrongdoing,
while Congress leader KC Venugopal urged the Union Home Minister and the Chief
Minister to ensure swift justice.
