An 18-year-old youth, his father and his 19-year-old friend were allegedly assaulted, threatened with firearms, stripped and forced to parade naked for about 50 metres through a crowded street in Sarsuna, south-west Kolkata, on Sunday after the youth was caught kissing his 13-year-old girlfriend.

The incident occurred near Khalpar Math in Khudiram Pally on October 25. It sparked local outrage on Monday, when residents vandalised the main suspects’ house and confronted police over alleged delays in the investigation.

Police said three people—the girl’s parents and maternal uncle—had been arrested, while raids were underway to apprehend other suspects.

According to police, the girl’s father and maternal uncle took the two youths to their house, assaulted them and summoned the 18-year-old’s father. The three were allegedly beaten and threatened at gunpoint before being forced to parade naked along a lane.

The victim’s father alleged that he was told to kill his son or face the consequences, and agreed to strip to save him. Local resident Arnab Saha said the assailants threatened to shoot anyone who intervened.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Aggarwal said a case had been filed under multiple provisions relating to attempted murder, assault, wrongful confinement, extortion, criminal intimidation and abduction, as well as the Arms Act.

The victims’ medical examinations had been completed, but no firearms had been recovered. Police were collecting CCTV footage and identifying witnesses, Aggarwal said.

Residents also accused local political figures of backing the suspects and alleged that police had initially failed to search the house properly. The Trinamool Congress condemned the incident as “dastardly” and denied the involvement of its supporters, saying the matter was being politicised.

Social activists condemned the alleged public humiliation, while commentators warned that mob vigilantism was becoming increasingly prevalent in urban areas.
