A major oil facility in Bahrain was reportedly hit by an Iranian drone strike on Monday amid the rapidly escalating West Asia war.  The strike hit the refinery operated by Bapco Energies on Sitra island, south of the capital Manama. The company later declared force majeure on its group operations following the attack on the refinery complex.

Visuals showing thick plumes of smoke rising from the oil facility were widely circulated on social media platforms.

“A fire broke out at a unit of the Bapco Energies refinery following an Iranian missile strike," Bahrain's National Communication Centre reportedly said in a statement. It added that the fire had been contained soon.

According to reports, the Ministry of Health of Bahrain announced that an Iranian drone attack targeting Sitra early Monday led to 32 civilians being injured. The state news agency of Bahrain reported that four individuals among the casualties are in critical condition, including children who require surgery.

The Bapco facility is among Bahrain’s most important energy assets and plays a key role in the country’s refining and petroleum export capacity. Bapco Energies said that despite the incident, domestic fuel supplies remain secure. “All domestic market needs remain fully secured and supplies will continue without disruption, supported by proactive plans in place,” the company said.

This comes after an Iranian ballistic missile had struck Bahrain’s main oil refinery earlier, triggering large fires at one of the Gulf nation’s most critical energy facilities. The Ministry of Interior of Bahrain on Sunday had also claimed that Iran attacked civilian targets in a water desalination plant after a drone attack.

The escalating West Asia war was triggered after the US and Israel jointly launched airstrikes into the Iranian territory on 28 February, targeting its top leadership and military bases. It led to the death of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei bringing a nearly 40-year era to an abrupt closure. It has been 10 days since the war began altering the geopolitical situation in the region. This reported attack on the Bapco oil refinery came as Iran selected Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei as the nation's Supreme Leader.

Saudi Arabia says Iran will be ‘greatest loser’ if attacks continue

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned Iran’s “heinous” attacks on the kingdom and on other Gulf, Arab and Islamic countries.

The ministry said attacks on civilian sites, including airports and oil facilities, “indicates nothing other than a determination to threaten security and stability and constitutes a flagrant violation of international charters and international law”.

It also pushed back on Iran’s justifications for the attacks, dismissing as false Tehran’s claims that Saudi Arabia had allowed fighter jets and refuelling aircraft to operate from its territory for the war. The ministry clarified that the aircraft in question were conducting aerial patrols to protect Saudi and GCC airspace from Iranian missiles and drones.

It also warned that continued Iranian attacks “signifies further escalation” and will have a profound impact on current and future relations.

“We emphasize that Iran’s current actions toward our nations do not reflect wisdom or an interest in avoiding the expansion of the cycle of escalation, in which Iran would be the greatest loser,” the ministry said. [Al Jazeera]

Starmer, Trump hold call about Iran war

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Donald Trump held a call Sunday about the Middle East war, the UK government said, after fierce criticism of the British premier by the US leader.

Trump had lobbed insults at Starmer over the latter's initial refusal to have any role in the US-Israeli war with Iran, which began on 28 February.

"The leaders began by discussing the latest situation in the Middle East and the military cooperation between the UK and US through the use of RAF bases in support of the collective self-defence of partners in the region," Starmer's office said in a statement.

"The prime minister also shared his heartfelt condolences with President Trump and the American people following the deaths of six US soldiers.

"They looked forward to speaking again soon," the statement added.

It did not mention whether the pair discussed the apparent fracturing of their close relationship over the past week. [AFP]

US says it will not hit Iran energy sector

The United States will spare Iran's energy infrastructure as it wages war with Israel against the Islamic republic, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday.

With oil prices rising dramatically, he told CNN that disruptions to the petroleum and gas industry will be short lived -- "worst case, that's a few weeks. That's not months."

Israel attacked oil storage facilities Saturday in and around Tehran, sparking huge fires in the first such attacks reported since the war started last weekend. Wright seemed to downplay them.

"These are Israeli strikes, these are local fuel depots to fill up the gas tank," Wright said.

He added: "The US is targeting zero energy infrastructure. There are no plans to target Iran's oil industry, their natural gas industry, or anything about their energy industry." [AFP]
