Lionel Messi scored twice in four minutes as Inter Miami beat Atlanta United 3-1 on Sunday in Bangladesh time to extend their winning streak to three matches, with the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs approaching.
The 39-year-old Argentine superstar leads the MLS scoring chart with 25 goals, six ahead of FC Dallas striker Petar Musa and Philadelphia's Milan Iloski.
German Berterame opened the scoring in the 45th minute, heading home a pass from Luis Suarez after Messi had helped create the opportunity. Messi then doubled Miami's lead in the 56th minute, weaving through Atlanta's defence before firing a left-footed shot into the net.
Four minutes later, Messi struck again, racing onto a pass from Suarez and beating defender Junior Alonso before finishing past goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos.
Fafa Picault converted a penalty in the 89th minute for Atlanta, who remain second-to-last in the Eastern Conference and face an uphill battle to reach the playoffs.
Messi also registered an assist, drawing level with LAFC's Son Heung-min atop the league's assists chart. He became the first player in MLS history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons.
Miami, who secured a playoff berth on Wednesday, have won three straight matches under coach Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez, who took charge last month.
