Financial uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh’s U-18 hockey teams has eased, clearing the path for their participation in the upcoming U-18 Asia Cup in Japan.
After weeks of uncertainty over travel and funding, the Bangladesh Hockey Federation has secured corporate sponsorship to ensure both boys’ and girls’ teams depart Dhaka on 26 May, ahead of the tournament starting on 29 May.
On Sunday, it was confirmed that Epyllion Group has contributed Tk1 crore as sponsorship. The amount covers nearly 45 per cent of the estimated Tk2.5 crore cost for the tour. The Federation is now seeking additional support from the National Sports Council to bridge the remaining gap.
“This Tk1 crore covers almost 45 per cent of our budget for sending teams to an expensive country like Japan. It is a massive relief. We have already contacted relevant government departments for the rest of the funds,” said Federation General Secretary Lt Col Riazul Hasan (Retd).
Expectations are high after last year’s strong showing in China, where the boys finished runners-up and the girls secured a historic bronze on debut.
This year, the boys are placed in Group B alongside China, Malaysia and Pakistan, while the girls face hosts Japan, China and Chinese Taipei.
“If all goes to plan, both teams will depart on May 26,” he added.
Training is underway at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), with the boys in camp since 1 May and the girls joining from 5 May. Coaches Moududur Rahman Shuvo and Zahid Hossain Raju continue to lead the respective sides.
