Alex Marshall, consultant to Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) anti-corruption unit, has opened an investigation into allegations of match-fixing involving BCB director Muhammad Mukhlesur Rahman, sources confirmed Daily Sun.
The development came after an investigative video report by sports journalist Riasad Azim, which alleged that Mukhlesur - also known as Shamim - was involved in fixing during the Bangladesh Premier League’s (BPL) Sylhet leg, particularly in matches involving Noakhali Express.
The report included audio recordings and details of alleged communication between spotters and individuals linked to the franchise.
Following the launch of the probe, Mukhlesur resigned from the BCB’s audit committee and other board responsibilities, though he has retained his position as a director.
“For the sake of a proper investigation, I have resigned from the audit committee and all other responsibilities, but I will remain a director. I want a clean investigation into the matter,” he told Daily Sun.
Marshall is expected to oversee the inquiry, including the examination of call records, financial trails and possible breaches of both the BCB’s and International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption codes.
Two individuals associated with Noakhali Express, Towhidul Haque Towhid and Imran Hassan, were earlier removed from the team on the BCB’s instructions after separate allegations emerged.
However, the investigative report claimed that influence over the franchise continued through other intermediaries.
Mukhlesur was elected to the BCB in its most recent board election.
Noakhali Express, a new franchise in this year’s BPL, finished bottom of the six-team competition and were the first side to be eliminated.
The Noakhali franchise also attracted headlines for the wrong reasons after a Daily Sun investigation exposed Niaz Khan, their assistant coach who served as the strength and conditioning coach of Dhaka Capitals in the last BPL.
Niaz claims to be a mastermind behind Afghanistan’s talent identification, boasting a CV that includes a stint with the national team during the Asia Cup but the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) doesn’t even have the foggiest idea who he is. A veteran Afghan coach also questioned Niaz’s credentials.
Furthermore, while Noakhali list him as "Niaz Ul Islam" in official posts, his Facebook profile identifies him as "Niaz Khan."
