Bangladesh were eliminated from the Hockey World Cup Qualifier Playoff Series after suffering a heavy 8–0 defeat to Pakistan in the second match at Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium in Dhaka on Friday. Having already lost the opening game 8–2, the hosts conceded the three-match series with one fixture remaining, turning Sunday’s final encounter into a mere formality.
After the loss, midfielder Obaidul Hasan Joy admitted that Bangladesh struggled to adhere to the tactical plan set by the coaching staff.
“We were trying to play according to the plan our coach gave us. At times we managed to stay within that plan, but many times we couldn’t stick to it, and that’s why we conceded the goals,” Joy said.
“Pakistan is definitely a big team, but everyone in our squad tried to follow the instructions and worked hard from their own position.”
Despite creating a few promising chances, Bangladesh failed to score in the second match. Joy felt their inability to convert opportunities was decisive.
“We got chances today, but we couldn’t make use of them. That’s why we couldn’t score. Still, I believe everyone gave their best,” he added.
Their penalty-corner unit also continued to struggle, largely due to Pakistan’s organised defen-sive structure. “We tried to follow the plan for the PCs, but their defence was very strong. That’s probably why we couldn’t score from them today,” he explained.
