Air quality in the capital has improved following rainfall over the past two days, offering temporary relief from pollution.

According to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) published on Tuesday morning by IQAir, Dhaka ranked ninth among 119 cities worldwide, recording a score of 107.

This level is considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” but marks an improvement compared to previous days.

In contrast, Delhi topped the global pollution list with an AQI score of 296, categorized as “very unhealthy.” Lahore ranked second with a score of 178, while Kinshasa came third with a score of 161—both falling under the “unhealthy” category.

Kathmandu secured the fourth position with an AQI score of 157, followed by Tashkent in fifth place with a score of 127.

Experts say recent rainfall helped reduce dust particles and pollutants in the air, leading to improved air quality in Dhaka. However, they warn that this improvement may be temporary, as pollution levels could rise again without sustained environmental measures.

According to IQAir standards, an AQI between 0–50 is considered “good,” 51–100 “moderate,” and 101–150 “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” Higher levels indicate increasingly hazardous conditions.

While the recent rain has brought short-term relief, long-term efforts are necessary to ensure cleaner and healthier air in Dhaka.
