Police detained four leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League during a hunger strike by candidates excluded from the 45th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) gazette in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University (DU) around midnight on Thursday.

The detainees were taken to Shahbagh Police Station for questioning in the presence of the university’s proctorial team. They reportedly include former leaders and activists of the organisation from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and Dhaka University.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, candidates who had received the Bangladesh Public Service Commission’s (PSC) final recommendation for the 45th BCS but were subsequently excluded from the gazette began the hunger strike on Thursday afternoon.

Police launched an operation after receiving information that leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League were among the protesters, eventually detaining four people.

The detainees were identified as Md Habibul Islam, deputy general secretary of the Chhatra League’s Ashraful Haque Hall unit at BAU; Moniruzzaman, a candidate for the organisation’s education and study circle secretary post; and Akram Gazi Hridoy, a former vice-president of the Chhatra League’s Amar Ekushey Hall unit at DU. Police could not immediately confirm the identity of the fourth detainee.

Eyewitnesses said several DU students and leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal were present during the arrests. Chhatra Dal activists also helped hand over the detainees to police.

Sources said a group of Chhatra Dal leaders and activists led by Nasir Uddin Shawn was present at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.

Kamal Uddin, in-charge of Nilkhet Police Station, said police had gone to the site through the DU proctorial team.

“After confirming that the four detainees were former leaders of the banned organisation Chhatra League, they were taken to Shahbagh Police Station for questioning. We will take legal action against them after verification,” he said.
