A University of Chittagong (CU) student died after being electrocuted while hanging a banner at university hall gate on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, a student of the Department of Zoology in the 2024–25 academic session.

According to sources, Ariful suffered the electric shock around 10pm while hanging a banner of his department at the gate of Shahid Abdur Rab Hall.

University authorities disconnected power to the entire hall and rescued him. He was initially taken to the university’s medical centre, where doctors referred him to a specialised hospital in the city.

Dr Abu Toyeb, chief of the CU Medical Centre, said Ariful’s condition was critical. After providing first aid, doctors advised taking him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. However, given his critical condition, he was taken to nearby Evercare Hospital.

Ariful died on the way to the hospital.
