The divisional-level competitions of the National University Inter-College Sports Competition 2026 have begun amid a festive atmosphere as part of the government’s “Learning with Happiness” programme.
National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM
Amanullah inaugurated the Dhaka divisional competition at the Government
Physical Education College ground in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, on Sunday.
A total of 1,472 athletes and players from different
colleges across 13 districts of Dhaka division are taking part in the three-day
competition. The competitions are being held in various sporting events among
the best players from the respective districts.
The Dhaka divisional round will conclude on Tuesday
with a closing ceremony and prize-giving programme. The winners of this round
will participate in the national-level competition.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural
ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Dr ASM Amanullah said the National University wants
to create opportunities for students to grow up in a joyful and humane
environment through sports and cultural activities, alongside classroom
education.
“To achieve this goal, we have given the highest
priority to sports and co-curricular activities for students of affiliated
colleges,” he said.
Dr Amanullah said if a wave of sports participation
could be created among nearly 4 million students, it would have a positive
impact on educational institutions across the country.
“As part of the ‘Learning with Happiness’ programme,
there is no alternative to students’ participation in sports and cultural
activities alongside their studies,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of sports in students’
lives, Dr Amanullah said, “Many of us have lost our childhood. Now we are
trying to bring back that childhood and restore the joy of adolescence and
youth.”
“In line with the government’s expectations and
interest, we want to revive sports and cultural activities among boys and girls
across the country,” he added.
Dr Amanullah said the sports programme, which began
with Dhaka division, would gradually be organised in the other seven divisions
of the country as well.
“The National University will continue such
initiatives in the future to keep the young generation healthy, productive and
free from drugs,” he said.
Speaking as the chair of the programme, National
University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Lutfor Rahman said students must
engage in sports and other co-curricular activities alongside academic education
to become well-rounded individuals.
“These activities play an undeniable role not only
in helping students obtain certificates but also in developing them into humane
and responsible individuals,” he said.
