Two university students sustained serious injuries after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm in front of Dhaka University’s Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture on Sunday afternoon.

The victims, identified as Sufia Akhter, 22, and Farah Akhter, 22, both study at East West University. Bystanders rescued the pair while they were unconscious and rushed them to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency department.

The incident occurred around 5.30pm.

An eyewitness and friend of the victims, Aglina, stated that the group was seeking shelter near the sculpture during a sudden bout of heavy rain and wind when the lightning bolt hit the two women.
