The Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and hall union elections are being held for the first time since the institution became a university.

With heightened security and administrative measures in place, the voting started at 9:00am on Tuesday (6 January) and will continue until 3:00pm without any break.

Long queues were seen outside polling centres from early morning.

A total of 16,500 students are expected to vote at 39 centres with 178 booths for the JnUCSU election. In addition, 1,242 students will exercise their voting rights in a hall union election.

Teachers, officers, employees and journalists entered the campus under heightened security, using designated gates and showing valid pass cards.

The election was originally scheduled for 30 December but was postponed following the death of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, after an emergency syndicate meeting. Following student protests, the university authorities later fixed 6 January as the new polling date.
