Towhid Hridoy struck his maiden Test century to keep Bangladesh in the contest, guiding the hosts to 205 for seven at lunch on the third day of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet on Saturday.
Hridoy reached the milestone shortly before the break and remained unbeaten on 100 off 171 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six. Bangladesh, however, still trailed West Indies' first-innings total of 356 by 151 runs.
With opener Shadman Islam unable to bat in the first innings due to an ankle injury, Bangladesh have only Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed left to support Hridoy.
Resuming the day on 88 for three, Bangladesh added 117 runs in the morning session but lost four wickets, three of them to West Indies' spinners.
Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim looked to steady the innings with a 78-run stand for the fourth wicket before left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican broke through. Mushfiqur drove a flighted delivery from around the wicket straight to Brandon King at short cover, who dived to his left to take the catch. Mushfiqur departed for 34, leaving Bangladesh at 129 for four.
Hridoy brought up his first Test half-century off 109 balls in the following over. But Bangladesh soon lost another wicket as Liton Das fell to a similar delivery from Warrican, driving the ball to King at cover for eight. The hosts slipped to 141 for five.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 16 off 30 balls before Roston Chase dismissed him. Attempting a paddle sweep, Miraz was caught by Justin Greaves at first slip, who dived to his right to complete the catch. Bangladesh were then 179 for six.
Warrican claimed his third wicket when Hasan Mahmud was given out caught behind for one off 12 balls following a review. Replays confirmed an outside edge, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 184 for seven.
Hridoy and Taijul then added an unbeaten 21 runs before the interval, with Hridoy contributing most of the runs. He marked his maiden Test hundred by placing his helmet on the handle of his bat and raising it in celebration.
Taijul remained unbeaten on one off 14 balls, while Warrican had figures of three for 60 at the break.
