Bangladesh dominated much of the first half but failed to break down Bhutan's defence, going into the interval at 0-0 in their SAFF Championship opener at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.
Coach Thomas Dooley sprang a surprise with his starting XI, deploying right-back Bishwanath Ghosh as the central striker in a bold tactical gamble. Bishwanath caused some problems for Bhutan's defence and found himself in several promising positions, but neither he nor his teammates could find the target.

Bangladesh's attacking intent was evident early on. In the eighth minute, Foysal Ahmed Fahim tested Bhutan goalkeeper Gyeltshen Zangpo with a powerful effort from outside the box. His first attempt was blocked by a defender before Zangpo dived to keep out the follow-up.
Shamit Shome came close in the 12th minute with a header that slipped through the goalkeeper's gloves, but Zangpo recovered quickly to gather the ball ahead of Bishwanath. The Bangladesh forward then sent another header wide.
Shome threatened again in the 25th minute, forcing Zangpo to turn his effort behind for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Bishwanath struck a volley from inside a crowded box, but his attempt flew wide of the far post.

Bishwanath had another opportunity in the 38th minute after collecting a teammate's pass, but his shot missed the target. Moments later, Zangpo held Rakib Hossain's delivery at the second attempt to deny Bangladesh another opportunity.
The first half also witnessed a worrying injury for Bhutan. Forward Tsering Wangchuk went down in pain after Saad Uddin's knee struck his upper back during a challenge for possession. Play was halted for several minutes as he received treatment before being carried off with the help of medical staff. He was later taken away from the stadium in an ambulance.
