Bangladesh national football team head coach Thomas Dooley has been impressed by the world-class facilities at ABG Sports City, praising its pitches, gym, swimming pool and modern sporting infrastructure as he expressed optimism about the future of football in the country.

The German-American coach also hailed the excitement surrounding the ongoing ABG University Cup 2026, describing the competition as an encouraging platform for emerging talent.

Dooley shared his views after watching the second semi-final at Bashundhara Kings Arena on Monday, where American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) beat Fareast International University in a penalty shootout to reach the final. He later presented the Player of the Match award to AIUB goalkeeper Mehedi.

“The facilities here are absolutely first-class. When I first saw the stadium, I thought it was beautiful. The pitch and the stadium are simply outstanding. I have also visited the gym, swimming pool, coffee area and the entire sports complex. Everything here is first-class,” Dooley said on Monday.

The Bangladesh coach was equally impressed by the passion surrounding university football, praising the country’s enthusiasm for the game and its affection for teams such as Argentina and Brazil.

Having watched the final 15 minutes of the semi-final, Dooley said he enjoyed the attacking approach of the young players.

“I watched the closing stages of the match. Their attacking football was exciting. We all want to score goals and play on the front foot. I believe something special can emerge from here in the near future,” he said.

Asked whether he had spotted potential national team players, Dooley said he wanted more time to assess the youngsters closely. However, he was encouraged by the first touch and movement of some players.

He also urged young footballers to improve their game awareness by scanning their surroundings before receiving the ball and planning their next two or three seconds. He believes that habit alone could improve their performances by 20 to 30 per cent.

The football tournament, initiated by Anvir Bashundhara Group (ABG) chairman Sayem Anvir Sobhan, will conclude on Tuesday with Daffodil International University taking on AIUB in the final at Bashundhara Kings Arena.

The champions will receive Tk10 lakh in prize money, while the runners-up will take home Tk5 lakh.
