The Robi Bowler Hunt has identified 21 promising bowlers from a nationwide pool of more than 25,000 participants, with two exceptionally talented youngsters also receiving special recognition at a colourful closing ceremony on Monday.
Nine-year-old Saif stole much of the spotlight with his confidence and unusual bowling action, reminiscent of former South African spinner Paul Adams. The left-arm wrist spinner announced that his ambition was to dismiss Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Tamim Iqbal.
When Tamim later asked him which delivery he would use, Saif immediately replied, "Googly", showcasing his understanding of the game despite his tender age.
Saif and 12-year-old left-arm spinner Shoaib received special awards, although the competition was officially open only to bowlers aged 16 and above. Their presence became one of the highlights of the ceremony.
The BCB revived its nationwide talent-hunting initiative after an eight-year gap, partnering with mobile operator Robi. Launched on September 15, the programme attracted over 25,000 applicants, forcing organisers to close registration earlier than planned because of overwhelming interest.
Following the initial screening, 143 bowlers advanced to the next stage, comprising 57 pacers and 86 spinners. The group included 108 males and 35 females.
Two rounds of national trials were subsequently held in Dhaka. The first reduced the number to 42 before experienced coaches picked the final 21 in the concluding assessment. Four women made the final selection.
The successful candidates were formally introduced through a fashion show at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday evening. Tamim and officials from the BCB and Robi handed them commemorative awards. The event also featured video presentations, fireworks and a fire show.
National team spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, BCB High Performance head coach Mohammad Salahuddin, and coaches Corey Collymore and Dipu Roy Chowdhury were among the judges during the selection process.
Tamim praised the organisers and assured the selected bowlers that the BCB would take responsibility for their development.
"I would call it a successful campaign. I want to thank everyone for visiting every division and searching for the next Nahid Rana or Taskin Ahmed. I closely followed the entire process and received messages from many people. I am proud of the work done by Robi and the entire team.
"These bowlers are now our responsibility. They will be placed under the supervision of our High Performance unit and groomed to serve Bangladesh cricket. We will ensure they receive proper care and provide them with a platform to demonstrate their
