AIUB edge Fareast to book ABG Cup final spot

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) secured their place in the Anvir Bashundhara Group (ABG) University Cup football final after overcoming Fareast International University in a penalty shootout at Bashundhara Kings Arena on Monday.

The second semi-final witnessed an entertaining battle, with both teams displaying attacking intent from the opening minutes. Although AIUB struck first, they were unable to wrap up the contest in regulation time and eventually had to rely on penalties to seal their progress.

Riduan put AIUB ahead in the 18th minute, taking advantage of the opposing goalkeeper's forward movement before dispossessing him and finding the empty net.

Fareast came close to equalising four minutes later through Topu, whose long-range effort went over the crossbar. However, they drew level in the 32nd minute as Abdullah Al Rana converted a corner with a header.

The goal marked the first time AIUB had conceded in the tournament, with the teams heading into the interval tied at 1-1.

AIUB had two promising chances in quick succession in the 62nd minute, but Fareast goalkeeper produced a pair of impressive saves to deny them.

With neither side able to break the deadlock over 70 minutes, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. AIUB proved more composed, claiming a 3-1 victory to advance to the final.

AIUB will face Daffodil International University (DIU) in Tuesday's final, scheduled for 5:00pm at Bashundhara Kings Arena. TSports will broadcast the match live.
