Bangladesh wrapped up their Asian Champions Trophy campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against China on Monday, securing their first and only point of a demanding tournament.

The men in red and green fell behind early, with China taking the lead in the opening quarter. Unable to break through before the half-time whistle, Bangladesh went into the dressing room trailing by a single goal.

Their breakthrough came in the third quarter when captain Ashraful Islam stepped up and calmly converted a penalty stroke to level the score. With neither side able to find a winning goal in a tense final quarter, the teams shared the spoils.

The result brings a massive sense of relief for Bangladesh, who endured a tough run in their five-match group stage, losing their first four games. Their campaign opened with a punishing 13-0 defeat to hosts India, followed by a narrow 1-0 loss to Japan, a 6-1 defeat to Malaysia, and another heavy five-goal loss.

More importantly, Monday's resilient display served as sweet revenge against the Chinese side. Just a month ago, on 1 October in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, China handed Bangladesh a crushing 7-1 defeat at the Asian Games.

That painful loss dashed Bangladesh's target of a sixth-place finish, forcing them to settle for the seventh-place playoff. It also cost them a crucial spot in the upcoming Asian Games qualifiers and the Champions Trophy.

Bouncing back from that heartbreak, Bangladesh showed real fighting spirit on the pitch. The draw reminded fans of their historical ability to push China to the limit, having last defeated them in a shootout at the 2017 Asia Cup, and previously claiming a 3-2 victory in the Hockey World League Round 2 back in 2013.
