West Indies head coach Darren Sammy believes thorough preparation in Chennai played a key role in his side's eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the opening Test, while warning that the upcoming Sylhet challenge will be far from easy under head coach Phil Simmons.
The visitors dominated the spin battle in Dhaka, with Sammy particularly pleased to see his batters handle the hosts' spinners more effectively.
Sammy credited Cricket West Indies for arranging a preparatory camp at the Chennai Academy, where batting coach Floyd Reifer and Shree worked with the batters to help them adapt to subcontinent conditions.
“I think our spinners out-bowled their spinners, and our batsmen responded to playing spin better than theirs,” Sammy said on Sunday.
He also praised the team's ability to carry their preparations into the match, adding that the players were gradually settling into their respective roles.
Brandon King was another standout performer, with Sammy highlighting his contribution in the fourth innings.
However, the West Indies coach expects a tougher challenge in the second Test, which begins in Sylhet on 5 November . Bangladesh, under Phil Simmons, will be determined to bounce back after the defeat in Dhaka.
“One thing I know about Phil, Phil will not make it easy. He wants to win as well,” Sammy said.
He added that his team would approach the second Test with the same mentality but greater hunger, as they look to finish their World Test Championship campaign with an away series victory.
Sammy also acknowledged Bangladesh's strength at home, recalling their position in the WTC standings before the series after victories over Australia. He said his players were aware of what was at stake and remained determined to achieve their goals.
