Bangladesh's footballing greats rolled back the years at the National Stadium on Sunday, as members of the 2003 SAFF Championship-winning team and the 2010 South Asian Games gold-medal winning side came together for a nostalgic exhibition match ahead of the upcoming SAFF Championship.

Under the floodlights at the Paltan stadium, familiar faces including Alfaz Ahmed, Aminul Haque, Enamul, Amily and Mamunul Islam returned to the pitch, bringing back memories of two memorable chapters in Bangladesh football history.

More than the result, the occasion was about celebrating past achievements, renewing old friendships and reminding supporters of the passion football once generated across the country.

The two teams met in a friendly match that brought together players who had delivered some of Bangladesh football's finest moments. The 2003 side lifted the SAFF Championship trophy at the same venue, while the 2010 team claimed gold at the South Asian Games in Dhaka.

The match, which kicked off at 5:00pm, produced its first goal in the second minute when Zahid put the 2010 South Asian Games team ahead. Alfaz Ahmed then converted a penalty to bring the SAFF-winning side level. The 2003 champions found the net once more, but the score mattered little on an evening when memories and celebrations took centre stage.

For many, the occasion brought back memories of the night in 2003 when Rajanikanta, Alfaz, Aminul and their team-mates lifted the SAFF trophy at the National Stadium. Others recalled the 2010 South Asian Games triumph, when Zahid Parvez, Yusuf, Mintu, Enamul and Emily helped Bangladesh secure gold.

The final whistle came at around 6:30pm, about an hour after sunset. Under the bright floodlights, the stadium took on a special atmosphere, with around 100 spectators watching from the stands.

The former champions were soon surrounded by supporters eager to take photographs and meet their heroes. Despite being drenched in sweat after the match, the players happily obliged, spending time with fans without showing any sign of irritation.

The enthusiasm also kept journalists busy, with players from both sides stopping to speak to the media after the match.

Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque, who featured for the 2003 SAFF-winning team, was among those taking part. He also represented Bangladesh at the 2010 South Asian Games.

Speaking after the match, Aminul said the gathering was arranged to inspire the national team ahead of the regional competition.

"The SAFF Championship begins on 5 November. We played this exhibition match today, bringing together the 2003 and 2010 champion teams, to wish the Bangladesh team well and encourage them ahead of the tournament," he said.

Dhaka will host the SAFF Championship for the first time since 2018, with the tournament running from 5 to 17 November. Bangladesh are determined to reclaim the regional title after a 23-year wait, and expectations are high ahead of the home tournament.

The exhibition match was organised by the National Sports Council to build excitement among supporters and bring back some of the enthusiasm associated with the country's past football successes.

Mamunul Islam, a member of the 2010 South Asian Games gold-medal winning team, said playing alongside his childhood idol made the occasion particularly special.

"Playing alongside my idol is a big achievement for me. Matches like this turn into a reunion, where everyone comes together, talks, shares their experiences and catches up. I think this is a good sign for us and a positive development for SAFF football," he said.
