Bangladesh spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed believes the eight-wicket defeat to West Indies in the opening Test at Mirpur should serve as a wake-up call for the country's spinners, urging them to return to the basics rather than lose confidence after a disappointing performance.

Despite playing on a dry, dusty surface that offered considerable turn and uneven bounce, Bangladesh's spinners struggled to make the most of the conditions. They managed just eight wickets in the match, while West Indies' slow bowlers claimed 16. More concerning was Bangladesh's failure to take a single wicket with spin in the fourth innings, allowing the visitors to complete a comfortable victory.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Mushtaq admitted that his bowlers lost sight of their fundamental approach under pressure.

"Still, as a spinner you have to turn the ball, spin the ball. You can only beat people when you spin the ball," he said.

The former Pakistan leg-spinner revealed that the coaching staff had repeatedly instructed the bowlers to reduce their pace and focus on generating turn. However, the desire to win the match eventually took them away from the process.

"We tried to tell them to spin the ball and to bowl with lesser pace. But sometimes when you are trying to win the game, you don't remember the process, it gets lost," he added.

Mushtaq described the defeat as a valuable learning experience, insisting that patience, consistency and sustained pressure remain essential for taking wickets on turning surfaces.

"Sometimes in Test matches like this, it is a great wake-up call," he said.

Bangladesh will look to address their shortcomings when they face West Indies in the second Test in Sylhet from 5 November, with their World Test Championship campaign also in focus.
