Lika Podder rises to national badminton glory

Lika Podder, the 24-year-old daughter of a struggling fisherman, has overcome years of financial hardship to be crowned Bangladesh's new national badminton champion.

Representing the Narayanganj District Sports Association, Podder claimed her maiden senior national title by defeating former champion Urmi Akter of the Bangladesh Army in a thrilling women's singles final. In a hard-fought contest, she secured the victory with a 22-20, 11-21, 21-18 scoreline.

Overwhelmed by the historic win, Podder immediately made a video call to her mother in her hometown of Mongla. Unable to hold back her emotions, she broke down in tears as they shared the joy of a lifelong dream coming true.

"In my five-year senior career, this was the first time I reached the final. The joy of becoming a champion in my very first final is something I cannot express in words," Podder said after lifting the trophy.

Her path to the top has been far from easy. Growing up in a four-member family that barely survived on the fish her father caught in the local rivers, keeping her sporting dreams alive was a constant struggle. Unlike many top national players, she does not belong to a well-funded services team. Instead, she fought through her limitations, relying heavily on the support of the Elora Shuttling Academy, a sponsorship from Kawasaki, and the dedication of her coach.

For Podder, the national trophy is more than just a sporting prize; it is a true recognition of her family's long battle against poverty and the fulfilment of her mother's biggest hopes for her.

Looking ahead, the new champion views this success as her greatest inspiration. Armed with hard work and self-belief, she aims to defend her domestic title in the future while dreaming of bringing international glory to her country on the global court. She has proven that with firm determination and endless effort, no amount of poverty can stop a player from reaching the top.
