Sonargaon University (SU) cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Far East International University (FIU) in a Group B match of the ABG University Cup at Anvir Cricket Stadium, powered by AB Jibon’s four-wicket haul and an unbeaten half-century from Alauddin Mona.
Batting first, FIU struggled against Sonargaon’s disciplined bowling and were bowled out for 123 in 20 overs.
Fahim Ahmad top-scored with 29 off 19 balls, while Talha Zubair made 22 off 16 deliveries. Imanur Rahman contributed 19 off 25 balls.
Jibon led Sonargaon’s attack with an impressive spell of four overs, including a maiden, conceding just 13 runs to claim four wickets. Asif Hasan and Maidul Islam chipped in with two wickets apiece to keep FIU in check.
Sonargaon’s chase got off to a shaky start as they lost three wickets for 38 runs. However, Mona and Tanvir Hossain steadied the innings with an unbroken 86-run fourth-wicket stand to seal the victory.
Mona struck an unbeaten 59 off 45 balls, including five fours and three sixes, while Tanvir remained not out on 21 off 28 deliveries. Sonargaon reached 124-3 in 16.3 overs, winning with 21 balls to spare.
Talha Zubair took two wickets for FIU, while Ashikur Rahman claimed one.
Meanwhile, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and University of Scholars shared the points after playing out a goalless draw in the football competition of the ABG University Cup 2026 at Bashundhara Kings Arena in ABG Sports City on Wednesday.
ULAB started on the front foot, looking to secure all three points, but struggled to break down Scholars’ well-organised defence.
Although ULAB enjoyed greater possession in the first half, Scholars threatened with several dangerous counter-attacks. Both sides pushed for a breakthrough after the interval, but resolute defending and the goalkeepers’ efforts ensured neither team found the net.
ULAB had entered the match looking to bounce back after a 1-0 defeat to Sonargaon University in their opening fixture. However, Scholars’ disciplined and spirited performance denied them a much-needed victory.
Having failed to collect maximum points in their first two matches, ULAB now face a tougher task in their bid to progress from the group stage.
