Bangladesh U-19 came within a whisker of victory before settling for a dramatic tie against Afghanistan in the second match of their bilateral youth One Day International series in Al Amerat, Oman, on Monday.

Needing 16 runs off the final over, Bangladesh were left requiring 15 from the last four balls after managing just one run off the first two deliveries. Rubay Islam Rizon then reignited their hopes with a four, a two and a six off Amir Hamza’s next three balls.

With two runs needed off the final delivery, Bangladesh managed only one leg bye to finish on 304-8, matching Afghanistan’s 304-9.

Bangladesh had won the opening match by 33 runs and led the two-match series 1-0.

After losing the toss and being put in to field, Bangladesh lost control in the final powerplay, conceding 94 runs as Afghanistan posted a formidable total. Rizon led the attack with four wickets for 72 runs, while Jarif Siyam claimed two for 34.

In reply, Bangladesh made a promising start, putting on 70 runs for the opening wicket before adding another 79 for the third. However, the chase faltered in the closing stages.

Needing 24 runs from the final three overs, Bangladesh managed just one in the 49th over, leaving them with a daunting 16-run target in the last six balls.

Rizon refused to give up, striking boundaries and a six to bring Bangladesh within touching distance of an extraordinary win.

After taking four wickets, Rizon also starred with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 33 off just 19 deliveries to complete an impressive all-round performance.
