Long fairways, water hazards and hilltop tees have tested US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen, but the diplomat is enjoying the challenge as he explores the country’s golf courses and builds connections through the sport.

In an exclusive interview with TheGolfHouse, Christensen shared his experiences on Bangladesh’s greens, praised its vibrant golfing community and highlighted golf’s potential to strengthen people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and the United States.

During his nearly eight months as ambassador, Christensen has played at four courses, with Jolshiri emerging as his favourite so far.

“I really like the setting. Next to the river, it almost feels as though you’re outside the city. It’s also challenging because many of the holes are quite long,” he said.

The lengthy fairways have forced him to rely heavily on his 3-wood, while the rainy season has sent plenty of golf balls into the water. He is now looking forward to more rounds during winter, hopefully with fewer lost balls.

Christensen has also tested himself at Kurmitola and Army Golf Course, but Bhatiary in Chattogram has impressed him most with its spectacular scenery.

“Walking up the hills and teeing off from elevation towards the greens made it a memorable experience,” he said.

Describing Bangladesh’s golfing culture as small but vibrant, Christensen said the sport had become a natural conversation starter, helping him connect with fellow golfers on and off the course.

“Golf also provides a common language. People can share their love of the game and build relationships from that common interest,” he said.

He welcomed efforts to develop Bangladesh’s courses and explore the possibility of joining the Asian Tour, saying such progress could give the sport a significant boost.

With more time left in his tenure, Christensen hopes to tee off at more courses across Bangladesh, take on new challenges and discover more of what the country has to offer.
