After a surprise entry into the AFC Challenge League, Bangladesh's Fortis FC are targeting a quarter-final spot as they begin their Group C campaign in Kuwait on 17 October.
Last season finishing third in the Bangladesh Football league, Fortis earned a continental lifeline when champions Bashundhara Kings and runners-up Dhaka Abahani failed to meet club licensing rules. Fortis seized the chance, edging Kyrgyzstan’s Muras United 1-0 in the play-offs to secure their group stage spot.
Now facing hosts Al-Qadsia, India's FC Goa, and Tajikistan's FC Regar-TadAZ at Group C, head coach Masud Parvez Kaiser is determined to advance.
"We are not going to Kuwait just to participate or take a holiday," Kaiser told a press conference. "We must represent the whole country, not just Fortis. We will try our absolute best to reach the next round. Bangladesh football has the quality to go higher. Insha'Allah, our team is ready."
While the play-off win boosted morale, Kaiser warned his players to raise their game.
"The Muras match is history," Kaiser added. "That win gave the players belief they can beat anyone if they follow the plan. But keeping that same level isn't enough. We must reduce mistakes in attack, defence, transitions, and set-pieces."
Preparation was tough. By the time their entry was confirmed, seven regular players had left for other clubs. Kaiser had to quickly build a new squad blending local and foreign talent.
"The standard is much higher than our local league. That is why we signed foreign players and worked hard to unite the team," he explained, thanking the club management for their support.
Kaiser noted the first two matches are vital. His optimism is shared by Nigerian forward Pa Omar Babou, who has spent five consecutive seasons at the club.
"It was difficult when I first arrived, but Fortis accepted me like a son," Babou said. "Now, playing here is much easier. I have a good idea about the league."
Babou added he feels a strong duty to represent the nation and hopes to shine a positive light on Bangladesh football.
