The National Sports Council’s (NSC) old building, dating back to the East Pakistan era, will be demolished and replaced with a modern, international-standard high-rise building featuring indoor facilities and modern amenities for athletes, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque said.

The government has already begun the necessary work for the proposed project, while several local and foreign investors have expressed interest in investing in the new development.

Speaking as the chief guest at the closing and prize-giving ceremony of the 5th Federation Cup Taekwondo Competition at the NSC gymnasium on Sunday, Haque explained, the government plans to replace the existing old structure with a large high-rise building featuring international-standard facilities.

The redevelopment also carries a notable historical connection with the NSC's past. During the previous BNP government led by Prime Minister late Begum Khaleda Zia, the 20-storey NSC Tower was inaugurated at Purana Paltan. The foundation stone for the tower had been laid in 2003, and the project was built at a cost of around Tk45cr.

Now, with the BNP back in charge, the government is once again undertaking a major redevelopment of the NSC complex, this time with plans for a new high-rise facility designed to provide athletes with modern sporting infrastructure.

Haque expressed, the government wants to create a better sporting environment, particularly considering the difficulties athletes face in the heat.

The three-day Taekwondo competition featured 450 athletes from 28 teams and organisations across 34 weight categories. Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh jointly won the senior men's title, while the Bangladesh Army claimed the senior women's championship. Gazipur District Sports Association won the junior men's title and Mirpur DOHS Taekwondo Club took the junior women's crown.

The state minister later distributed prizes among the winners.
