An official at the Bangladesh embassy in Bangkok has shared a heartfelt account on social media of how emotions can transcend geographical boundaries and bring nations together after two Argentine citizens travelled to Bangladesh upon receiving visas from the embassy to watch the FIFA World Cup final with the country’s passionate Argentina supporters.
Sonia Munni, a counsellor at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Bangkok, wrote on Friday that Fernanda and Jonathan, who had arrived in Thailand about a month ago for a holiday, visited the embassy that day to apply for Bangladeshi visas.
“After Argentina won the semi-final, they decided to travel to Bangladesh to watch the World Cup final there. They had been staying in Chiang Mai, a city far from Bangkok, so they flew to the capital, collected their visas today [Friday], and then left for Bangladesh,” she said.
“They showed me a video on their phone of Bangladeshis watching an Argentina match and asked where it had been filmed. They wanted to experience the final there, celebrating alongside Bangladeshi fans. I smiled when I realised it was the Raju Memorial Sculpture area on the campus of my own alma mater, the University of Dhaka.”
Sonia wrote, “This evening, after returning home from work, I noticed that Fernanda shared a photo of us on her Instagram story with the caption in Argentine Spanish: ‘Cuando lo más Argentino que tenés cerca es Bangladesh!’ — which roughly translates as, ‘When Bangladesh is the closest thing to Argentina!’”
The official said that with their country about to play in the World Cup final, the two Argentines were thousands of miles away from home. Yet, at that moment of celebration, the extraordinary love and passion Bangladeshis have for the Argentine football team made Bangladesh feel, to them, almost like Argentina itself.
“This is not just a story about how art, sport, or culture can contribute to diplomacy. What truly amazes me is something even more profound: how shared emotion can bridge vast geographical distances and unite two nations,” she added.
