Defending champions Argentina are set to face Austria on Monday in their second group-stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Lionel Scaloni reportedly considering several changes to his starting lineup.
Argentina opened their campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Algeria, inspired by a record-breaking hat-trick from captain Lionel Messi.
Scaloni held a closed-door training session ahead of the match, fueling speculation about possible alterations to the team. The game will kick off at 11pm Bangladesh time at Dallas Stadium.
Much of the focus in training was on the fitness of defender Gonzalo Montiel. Although he trained normally with his teammates, the 29-year-old may still start on the bench against Austria as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
With Montiel's condition improving, Scaloni's concerns have eased somewhat. However, as a precaution, Nahuel Molina is expected to start in his place.
Scaloni is also believed to be weighing two additional changes to the lineup that defeated Algeria. One could come in attack, where Nicolas Gonzalez may replace Thiago Almada. Gonzalez is considered more effective at exploiting space, particularly against an opponent expected to press high up the pitch.
Another potential adjustment could see Julian Alvarez come into the starting XI in place of Lautaro Martínez. Alvarez made a substitute appearance in the opening match after recently recovering from injury.
According to Argentine outlet TYC Sports, Montiel completed the entire training session in boots. While he trained separately for part of Friday's session, the injury is not considered serious. He is expected to be included in the squad against Austria and could feature if needed.
Barring a few changes, Argentina are likely to retain most of the side that beat Algeria. Emiliano Martinez is expected to start in goal, with Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez and Facundo Medina forming the defense. Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister are set to anchor the midfield, while Messi will once again lead the attack.
If they continue to progress in training, Leandro Paredes and Nicolas Tagliafico could also make their first appearances of this World Cup.
